CoPA Remote

Student Technology

The New School will be providing a $500 technology grant to each enrolled degree-seeking student for the Fall 2020 semester. This grant will be issued into your student account and refunded to you on the first day of classes.

As our curriculum for Fall 2020 has been tailored for online teaching, we have devised this list of required equipment and software for all CoPA students to ensure students can get the most out of their courses and projects. Be sure to check out the degree-specific sections for more information.

Upgrades to consider when shopping for a computer
Processor (CPU)The heart of the computer. The various flavors of Intel Core i3, i5, i7, and i9 are generally sufficient for most tasks. Audio and Video Editors should consider an i5 or above. AMD also makes comparable chips for PC dektops and laptops.
Memory (RAM)RAM lets you run more programs (or Chrome tabs) at the same time and allows you to quickly switch between them. For video editing programs and DAWs such as Logic, Reaper, and Pro Tools, the more RAM the better. Most desktop computers allow you to upgrade the RAM on your own, but most Apple laptops are non upgradable after purchase. If you feel like you will be using your computer for these more intensive tasks, it's worth choosing more RAM. At the time of writing 16Gb is sufficient for most tasks.
Internal Storage (SSD)Storage allows you to save more programs and files to your computer. In most Apple laptops this is not upgradable and should be upgraded to what you expect to use at time of purchase. Avoid computers and tablets with only 32 Gb of storage, there just simply isnt enough room on those machines to store your personal files. Given the option, go with an SSD. SSDs are much faster than Hard Disk Drives or eMMCs. If you have an older laptop that works well but feels slow, upgrading the hard drive to an SSD can help. 256Gb is sufficient internal storage for most users.
Graphics Card (GPU)Helps with graphically intensive tasks such as video rendering and 3D modeling. A discrete GPU is preferred to an integrated one and will perform better. This is not upgradable after purchase in most laptops.
Minimum Specifications:At least 20 Mbps Download, 5 Mbps Upload
Recommended Specifications:At least 100 Mbps Download, 10 Mbps Upload
